Design+Manufacture for internationally acclaimed British Artist specialising in sculpture.
We are delighted to work with a renowned British Artist specialising in sculptures based on philosophical and scientific ideas. Working across a variety of media and materials, the artist has a deep knowledge and love of using metal in his work. Our first large engagement was to design and manufacture a plinth to support a large steel sculpture commissioned by the architect of a Land Mark Technology Centre in Philadelphia, USA.
On receiving sketches of an idea for a plinth, our design team suggested techniques to improve, value engineer and construct the plinth, keeping in line with visual requirements. Working with our CAD/CAM software we were able to develop a sophisticated design that fully met the brief within budget. We needed to take into account: weight and height of sculpture, accommodating uneven surfaces, visual of the plinth as the base of the sculpture.
Once the final design was approved, we fabricated the plinth in 5mm Mild Steel in our factory in Sittingbourne. We test assembled the plinth and finished it with a black patinated finish. The plinth was shipped out in pieces to the USA towards the end of 2017 and re-assembled on site, using detailed instructions for installation supplied by Contracts Engineering Ltd.
“We have really enjoyed working on this project. Understanding the requirements of a piece from an Artist’s perspective has been fascinating. Their knowledge, interest and expertise in the engineering and manufacturing process has made this a pleasure to work on. We are proud to be involved in such a prestigious project.” CEL Design Manager
“From the start, Contracts Engineering Ltd brought Engineering Design and Manufacturing expertise to this project. They assured us immediately in their understanding of our brief and their ability to confidently suggest improvements to the original sketch and manufacture the plinth. Contracts Engineering Ltd have proven themselves to be a valuable partner in our work and realising my art.” Artist
