Investing in our first robotic welding cell

Published - 7th Sep 2020

At CEL, continuing development and investment is very important to us, and we are excited to announce that we have purchased our first robotic welding cell. Our current welders are being trained to become robotic welding machine operators or more skilled fabricators, including MIG and TIG welding of stainless steel and aluminium alloys.

We hope that adding this machine will increase our overall consistency and efficiency, as well as expand our capabilities and allow us to increase the volume and range of work we put out.

There are several benefits of robotic welding that we hope to take advantage of, including better weld quality, consistent and faster cycle times, and no breaks in production. As robotic welding is an automated process, we are currently looking for projects to fill both our second and third daily shifts, to keep the machine running 24 hours a day.

To start with, the machine will be MIG welding mild steel, and we hope to move onto MIG welding stainless steel and aluminium within the next few months or so.

With robot welding automation, we can also reduce time spent per project, as well as cut the cost of direct labour and conserve materials. Robot welders are more consistent and can move more quickly from one weld to the next, speeding up the entire process.

Of course, manual welding poses several safety risks for welders – including electric shocks, flash burns to the corneas, and exposure to toxic fumes and gases. A major benefit from the addition of a robotic weld cell to our workshop is a safer working environment for our staff.

Major Benefits of Robotic Welding Automation

Reduce Time Spent Per Project

Robotic welding systems can continue working without interruption, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, making them ideal for high volume repetitive production. The cell provides a consistent and high quality weld, part after part, with a skilled operating performing adjustments and quality control reviews. This reduces the amount of time required per project, and increases overall productivity and throughput.

Increase Total Production Output

In our modern economy we must partner robots with skilled operators to increase productive capacity to meet the ever increasing demand for volume production suppliers close to customers and end markets. CEL will now be able to offer this service to customers across the UK and into Europe.

We look forward to improving our capacity as well as bringing manufacturing close to the customer, building exCELlence around us.
